Democratic Congressman arrested for illegal demonstration outside White House

Democratic congressman and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Luis Gutierrez was arrested Tuesday for participating in an illegal demonstration outside of the White House in support of continuing President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).

The sit-in, organized by immigration activist group United We Dream, took place front and center outside the White House. The protest was staged on the fifth anniversary of Obama’s executive action that shields hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from deportation. The order, along with other Obama-era immigration policies, is being reviewed by the Trump administration, which has signaled that major changes are coming.

Gutierrez is becoming quite efficient at landing himself in police custody. Back in March, another pro-illegal immigration/anti-Trump stunt in Chicago ended up playing out similarly to D.C.

Gutierrez and his fellow activists occupied an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Chicago and refused to leave, so they were finally forced to do so by authorities, which Gutierrez has since tried to use to his political advantage, painting himself as a fearless defender of the defenseless against the cruel Trump administration.

“Whether it’s transgender kids, whether it’s a woman’s right to choose, whether it’s fifteen dollars an hour, whether it’s our environment, whether it’s a Muslim ban,” Gutierrez told CNN’s Erin Burnett. “Part of being an American,” he continued, was “standing up … to unfairness and injustice.”
